"SNOW, WAVE, PINE: Traditional Patterns in Japanese Design" by Sadao Hibi and Motoji Niwa. Translation by Jay W. Thomas.
----- This book has tons of images of traditional Japanese patterns. It's totally inspiring, and makes me want to draw like crazy. It also has a very large catalogue of mon. I even found our family mon inside.

"Comickers" book series by Comickers Magazine
----- "Comickers Art" vol. 1-3 : Features some lovely art and good tutorials in the anime/manga style. Good reference.
----- "Japanese Comickers" vol. 1-2 : Features the art of several anime/manga artists in Japan and Korea. Good source of inspiration.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium (Student Edition), $399
----- Includes the newest version (CS4) of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Acrobat. The normal price for this set is $499, and normal prices for the programs are at least over $200 each. It's a pretty good deal. All you have to do is send proof that you're a college student to the guys at Adobe.

Rosetta Stone (Japanese)
----- I'm under the impression that this product is made of magic and unicorn horn. Also, my own inability to learn the language makes me want it.

Button Maker
----- A good one that lets me use my own designs. I feel like I could sell them for good money.

Lit Makeup Mirror
----- Something that can stand up on its own. It's hard carrying my stuff as I run back and forth to the bathroom every day. And its too dim in my room to use a normal mirror without a light.

Eyeshadow Pallet
----- A good one with lots of colors. All the ones I own are mostly neutral greys, whites, and browns. Boring.

Pom-Pom Scarf
----- A monochromatic scarf with a single large pompom on each end. Preferably striped.

Purse Hanger
----- One of those neat things that hook over tables and hold your bag up off the floor. I think it would be useful. One that is collapsable and small enough to be carried around would be perfect.

Big Hair Clips
----- I've started using them more now that my hair's been getting longer. Pretty ones would be nice.

11/15
1. Walking practice for the Japan Night Fashion Show. The dress they chose for me is very cute... The theme of the night is Irodori, or "Colorful," and my outfit's color theme is "black." I'm like the Black Ranger! Awesome.
2. I made a new Nihon-jin friend with the girl who stands in line in front of me. Sweet.

11/16
1. I painted a t-shirt for one of my art classes. We were supposed to put the original image of a pop icon on the front, and an parody of it on the back. I decided to be unique (and lazy) and split my design over the side, instead of having two images in the back and front. I think it turned out pretty well. I'll post a picture later.
2. Art History term paper due tomorrow. FML

11/17
1. I bought a raincoat for the first time from Burlington Coat Factory. It's blue, machine washable, has a removable liner, a secret pocket, a big hood, and a string I can pull to give it more shape. Also, it fits perfectly even though it's a size small for once. Go me!
2. I also bought boots for the first time from Target to go with my Fashion Show outfit. They're "stylish", flat, and practical. I think I'll be wearing them more than once.
3. Went to dance practice with Rachael as moral support. She's in the "Magical Girl" group, so she has to learn a cute dance. It didn't seem that hard, but as she said, she's "not very coordinated at ALL." I'll be helping her practice.
4. I finally opened the box from home tonight. Sorry so late. Loved everything!
5. I'm trying a method of curling my hair (without any hot tools) that I found on the internet. We'll see how it turns out (or if anything happens at all). If it's good, I might do it for the Fashion Show.

Weekend
1. I'm going to the Pacific Islander Club retreat all weekend. We're going to the place that's been having heavy wind, rain, and power outages for the last few nights. Hoo boy. Well, it should still be fun.

11/23
1. Japan Night
2. Class Registration
3. Pop Culture Paper Due

Some things I've noticed:

1. The most irritating thing about not being able to snap is not the inability to snap itself. It's how, inevitably, whenever I tell someone I can't snap, everyone in the room will immediately begin snapping obnoxiously and asking, "What, you can't do this? Huh? Huh?" And there will always be one or two people who come up and try to teach me how. "It's easy, just put your fingers together like this..." I KNOW HOW TO PUT MY FINGERS TOGETHER LIKE THAT, DAMMIT. Do you think I've never tried putting my fingers together like that? I am aware that I can't snap, you know. Thanks for making it obvious.

10/29
1. I've been going to the Japanese language exchange program every Thursday night. It's been pretty fun. (yay attractive Asian men)
2. I'm helping out with Japan Night in late November. I'm on the Decoration and Design team, I've been drafted into modeling in the Fashion Show, and I'm thinking about joining one of the dances. (I couldn't join the other one... too much bending and I'm still broken from aikido)
3. No class tomorrow, so we (me, Rachael, and Will from down the hall) decided to stay up until our friends with class woke up. Woohoo all nighter.

10/30
1. We stayed up until 8 AM. We hung tape and random signs from our friends doors while they were sleeping, and went to McDonalds when it opened at 6:00.  Fun.
2. I was totally unexcited about dressing up for Halloween, but Rachael had me try on a bunch of her black dresses and I ended up in a cute strapless one with a poofy skirt. I put on my light-up Halloween stockings, too. Us girls tried going to a Halloween Dance on campus, but the cops showed up and closed it down LITERALLY right when we got there. As in, the police car was coming in directly behind us as we were walking towards the building. LAME
3. We ended up going to a food truck and eating crepes and milkshakes. At least that was fun, even though it started pouring.

10/31
1. We were invited to a house party hosted by a friend of a friend of a friend. It turned out to be seven people in a basement smoking pot and playing beer pong. I got to be the un-fun person who finally said, "Okay guys, this isn't a party. Let's go now." At first just me and my girl friends were going to leave, but the other guys in our group whined and left with us even though we told them they could stay. LAME
2. We heard about another Halloween Dance, but when we showed up it was 18 and under. Which basically meant that it was filled with a bunch of scantily-clad highschool girls. LAME
3. Rachael and I wanted to go to Karaoke, but one of the whinier members of our group wanted to go to a "ritzy" Portland restaurant called the Roxy. We finally ended up going with them to the restaurant, which was fine but not at all worth putting up with a whiny semi-tantrum. At least walking to and from the restaurant was fun. We (meaning the 5 members of our 8 member group who I actually like) linked arms the whole way, which was funny, and best of all, warm.

11/1
1. Woke up in a grumpy mood, but Rachael cooked me waffles and now all is well.
2. I have so much to do today. I have to finish an art project, write a paper, study for an Art History midterm, do my laundry, fix my bed, clean the bathroom, go grocery shopping, cook dinner... etc... etc... etc... GANBATTE

10/19
1. My Canon Pixma MP130 printer (the one inherited from my aunt and uncle) decided to break this morning. First it got jammed. Then it refused to print because there was a "cartridge jammed" (error 1500) and it was low on black ink. I replaced the black ink, then it had blank white bars running horizontally down the page when I printed. I ran all of those cleaning function things with no results. Then I followed directions on the Canon website and reseated the printer head. Now it prints worse than before.
2. I wrote an email to the Canon support website, and they wrote back with instructions to reseat the printer head (which I already told them I did), or to buy a new Canon printer. ..... FRUSTRATION

10/20
1. I cooked Chinese-style simmered Salmon tonight. I didn't have any green onions or ginger, though. I was also trying Kikuman shoyu for the first time, so it turned out... good, but not great.

10/13
1. Tonight, I ordered the "Catwings" 4 Volume Boxed Set. This is the greatest day of my life. Even greater than when I had my fortune read through Plastic Dinosaur Tarot in front of a crepe stand.
2. Rachael and I were reminiscing on the series; how we read them in elementary school, how they were the greatest things ever, and how we've never seen them again. We thought that maybe, by some freaky coincidence, we had both imagined them. But then I found the series on Amazon (I wasn't dreaming!) and knew I had to order it. It should be here this week. What a great birthday present.

10/14
1. Skype is working tonight. Got to video chat with mom and Staci for a while. That was really nice. I miss Zippy...
2. Towards the end of my conversation with family, I was interrupted by a certain someone who wanted to Skype, too. I can't say that much, but it was really nice. And we talked for about an hour and a half. I wish it wasn't only my webcam that was working though. Still... I was told that I look pretty.
....
What am I saying? I still can't think straight. I'm a fool. But a happy fool.

10/14
1. Rachael treated me to dinner at Sushi Ichiban tonight. Nine plates. WOOHOO
2. Four of my friends surprised me with cake tonight after I got out of the shower. Chocolate and mint mousse, with 19 candles. (fire hazard!) That was so sweet... No one's ever done that for me before.
3. Mom, thanks for the iPod charger and the $20!
4. Tomorrow morning, we're waking up early to go and eat fancy waffles. It's waffle time, waffle time, won't you have some waffles of mine?

10/15
1.  It's my birthday today.
2. I've been recruited (somewhat grudgingly on my part) by the Japanese girl next door to participate in Japan Night's fashion show next month. It should be... interesting. Rachael's been drafted, too.
3. Steph just sent me an awesome birthday video where she showed me around their new dorm. Once I figure out how to do it, I think I'll make one too. On that note, she said that she wants us to meet up someday, somewhere if possible. I'd like that, too. Can you ask dad what he thinks about that?

I'm just going to write things as I think of them, so this post isn't quite finished yet.

10/5
1. Mom- Could you send two pencil boards (if you can find them, they might either be on the right of my bookshelf, or on the bottom shelf somewhere) when you send my shoes? I need them for my notebooks. Thanks!
2. On iTunes, if you are on a shared computer network (in a dorm, say), you can set it so that other users on the network can listen to whichever playlists you choose. I, of course, have it set to "Anime" and "Asian Pop". Last night, a chubby white girl and her friend knocked on my door, asking "Is one of you Kristen?" (My music is titled "Kristen's Anime and Asian Music") "Are you the one who likes Super Junior and DBSK?" she asked. "I love your playlist," she said, and went on to tell me how she felt that she was the only one who liked the groups, how cool they are, etc etc etc. At some point, I asked, a little weirded out, "Um... How did you find me?" She replied that she knew that I must have been in this building, and so she and her friend "started going up," and when they didn't find me, they "tried going back down."
.....
They went through TEN floors trying to find me, with only my first name to go by. TEN. And when they didn't find me the first time, they started again from the top down. WTF? Needless to say, I dramatically reduced the amount of music in my shared playlist.
3. I'm not only popular with creeps and guys with mustaches, I'm hot with the ladies, too.

10/6
1. I went to Ikea today. Tis a magical place.
2. Ate a huge plate of meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries(?), an open sandwich with bay shrimp, boiled egg, mayonaise, lettuce and tomatoes, and a delicious, fancy, apple cake. All for under $9. Ikea is a magical place.
3. After we got back to the dorm, me and my roommate assembled our new rolling swivel chairs and raced back and forth down the hallway, laughing like maniacs. Then we got our friend to join us. One Chinese guy happened to walk in on us, but we kept going anyway. He probably thinks Americans are crazy chair-racing lunatics now. Oh well.

10/8
1. I went to a Japanese language exchange thing after class today. It was pretty cool. I met a couple of nihon-jin exchange students and had a nice time. I don't know if "Mr.Sony-Toto" was there, but the guys who were there were a nice change for my eyes (after only having nerdy Vietnamese kids to look at for three weeks). They're going to have this program every week. :)
2. I was going to shower but I ended up chatting with Rachael for two hours instead. Oh well. Rachael is trying to convince me to go shower anyway (it's 2:40am) because she wants to see what my hair looks like after I go to sleep with wet hair. (It's pretty nuts)
3. Rachael wants me to go home with her over Thanksgiving break. What do you think?

10/9
1. I had a really fun day today. We didn't do anything that exciting, but I spent the day with some really nice, fun people that I like to be around. No semi-awkward conversations where you're not too sure if you like the person, or start wanting the conversation to end, or start thinking that there's some hidden agenda behind what someone's saying, or long monologues that you get bored of. Just a nice day with good friends. I need more of those.
2. Went to H-Mart to shop. We got lost on the way there, but it was still fun. I love how they play recent K-Pop over the speakers there. H-Mart is the reason that I started liking K-Pop.
3. Went to Burgerville for dinner. The chicken sandwich and the fries were excellent. The receipts they give you have little "nutritional facts" on them, and apparently my one Burgerville dinner was over 1800 calories. Holy-guacamole. I was kind of hyper the rest of the night. At least I spent the time skipping around, instead of bumming around.
4. Played Fluxx and Apples to Apples (two card games) with this same group of friends. Good times...
5. The "total win" card in Apples to Apples is the "My Body" card. (Apples to Apples is sort of like a word association game, where the "judge" puts down a card with an adjective on it, then everyone else puts down a card with a noun on it. The judge then chooses the card that he/she thinks is the best.) Fluffy. My Body! Depressing. My Body! Glorious. My body! LOL

10/10
1. Going to the Open Market on campus today. Fun stuff.

Some somewhat interesting happenings:

I'm adding things as I think of them.

Some somewhat interesting happenings:

9/28
1. First day of classes. My first class was at 2:00pm though, so I didn't have to wake up until 11:30. Pretty cool.
2. This art class was not what I expected. Apparently, in this class we won't really be doing art, we'll be talking about art. And by "talking", I don't mean "art history so we're learning actual facts about art" talking, I mean "spend half and hour speculating about the connotations associated with one picture" talking. In other words, we spend 2 hours and 50 minutes BS-ing a bunch of stuff about "meaning". Sigh. My teacher looks like she has a little too much gravity in her area. Everything about her seems to be pulled downward. I have yet to see her actually smile.
3. My Popular Culture class is... ... Not much I can say about that after only one day, but I can say that in the Mentored Inquiry Workshop that followed, I learned about paper structure (topic, 3 body paragraphs, and then conclusion! whoa!) and documenting my process through mind maps (AKA words in bubbles connected by lines). Welcome to college. We're big kids now.

9/29
1. Running around all day. First stand in line to activate computer account, then bolt down a fast breakfast/lunch, then go to class, then go to another class, then go to the bookstore to buy almost $300 in textbooks and art supplies, then lug it all back to the room, then go to Safeway, then cook dinner, then homework!
2. On the bright side, I cooked fish jun correctly this time. Talapia again. Talapia is tasty and light, but a little bit firmer (hard to separate with chopsticks) than other white fish like sole or basa. Still, pretty good. I have two pieces of fish as leftovers. Cool.
3. My other art class seems more like a regular art class. It had better be, what with the entire page of supplies we needed to buy. My teacher seems rather scattered. Even with the new Swine Flu regulations, she had us pass a single sign-in page around the room, using the same pen, and she said if we miss 5 days of class she'll lower our grade even it was because we were sick with swine flu. These are all prohibited by the new school rules sent out to the teachers. She said "she'd better get around to reading that" in class.
4. My art history teacher is excellent. He can talk about history for almost two hours without me getting too bored, which is saying a lot. He's nice and old and spells words at ludicrous speed.

9/30
1. When we woke up this morning (or shall I say "afternoon?"), we had no hot water in our room. It's back now, but that was scary. And cold.
2. I had to make a new blog for one of my art classes. I don't know how interesting it will be, but it's here: tenkkay.blogspot.com
3. I met the teacher for said art class in the bathroom today. You know, Gravity-Teacher. Anyway, we shared some banter about there being a mess in the first stall, no toilet paper in the second stall, and no soap or paper towels in the downstairs bathroom. I think I saw her smile once. Go me.

10/1
1. I didn't get to go to the club fair today, because I had class until the event was over. Grr.
2. I went down with some friends for free cupcakes, and somehow ended up going to see a free movie. It was Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story." I actually thought it was pretty good. I feel somewhat more informed now.
3. After the movie, we went and got some crepes from a crepe stand. They were... I don't understand how it can be called a crepe without whipped cream. Besides that, it was yummy and in a nice triangle shape.

10/2
1. Woke up at noon today. Most excellent.
2. Went to the Japanese Gardens (which were wonderful) and took a LOT of pictures.
3. I went to Lloyd Center Mall and walked around until it closed at 9:00. I got a couple of cute cardigan/jackets, ate a pretzel from Pretzelmaker, and had some funky rainbow icecream. I'm going to get fat. I used the money from Popo and Grandpa for all of that, so thank you!
4. I couldn't confirm if there really was going to be a Pacific Islander Club meeting today, so I went to all these things. Turns out I missed it. AAARRRGGGHH... I'd been looking forward to that meeting all week. Good thing I've already got the numbers of three new friends in the club.
5. I just got the songs from Super Junior M's new mini album. They. Are. Awesome. The title song, "Super Girl", is so addictive and the music video is fabulous. I think I may love it too much.

Other:
1. It's cold.
2. Mom, can you look on the top of my dresser, on the right? There's a notepad with "Things to Draw" written on it. Could you email me that list? It's a list of things I want to draw but am afraid I will forget. Thanks!
3. Out of all the Vietnamese kids on our floor, there's a guy who wants me to help him practice his English pronounciation every weekend. He's perfectly nice, likes to bring foreign food for me and Rachael to try, is a little bit awkward, is not extremely attractive at all, and has two lazy eyes. Rachael is pretty sure he likes me.  ...  That's so sad. I hate having to figure out how tell nice, awkward guys that they're totally, completely, and absolutely not my type. He also asked if I wanted to go to Chinatown with him. I refused. Kawaisou.
On that note, why is every guy I attract either creepy, mustached, or mentally/physically disabled? Or all three? Siiiigh....
4. I just got stuck behind my desk because my wooden chair doesn't slide and my socks have no traction. I kind of just scrabbled around for 60 seconds, flailing around with my socks sliding all over the floor, until eventually I was able to climb out. I'm so smooth.
5. There's a floor meeting tomorrow night. Maybe I'll see the cute Japanese guy or the Chinese guy's cute friends. That would be nice.
6. I forgot my airwalk shoes at home.

So, this is what I've been up to lately. (For family and friends)

Saturday: I had my traditional unagi, broccoli, and natto dinner. It was delicious. Hopped on the plane late that night, and slept on and off for the next five hours. My back and hips were still recovering, so it was not comfortable. Carrying around a ten-pound bag didn't help that much, either.

Sunday: Arrived in Portland. My aunt and uncle picked me up from the airport, which was super nice of them. Along the way, I saw some horse statues made of gnarly pieces of wood. They look like the roam the city at night, either fighting crime by moonlight or looking for fresh blood. I like to think that it's the first one. Had the choice of taking a nap or going to church (of course I chose the nap), then moved into the dorms. Went to eat sushi, ate some strange crab-stuffed mushroom things, went to Target. Target is so overated. They hardly have any brands -- all the clothing is "Mossimo" or something (sounds like the name of the foreign guy in The Wedding Planner)-- and things are still expensive. $40 for a floor mat? Seriously? Got dropped off back at the dorms, then went to Safeway with my new roommate and her boyfriend. Speaking of my new roommate and her bf, they're super nice and awesome. He went back home on Thursday, but he made sure to tell me as many Asian racial slurs as possible before he left. I love Asian jokes (to an extent).

Monday: Went on an "Eco-Tour" of campus, where they had us marvel at all the ways our college is environmentally friendly. (I mostly just went on it so that I would be able to find my way around later.)  Went to a Rummage Sale where I scored a bunch of free hangers. Even hangers are better when they're free. Went to an information session for business minors-- you only need to take 6 classes especially for business minors to get the degree at this school! I wanted to play Capture the Flag for the first time that night, but we had a community meeting for our floor. Speaking of my floor, about 80% of the people on it are Vietnamese. They're nice and all, but... I can only understand about 50% of what they say. Why did we get the one type of Asian that I don't understand at all? I can do Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. But English with a Vietnamese accent has no consonants, and only thing I can say in Vietnamese is "pho". At least they're super friendly and love to cook. Our floor always smells good, and we've already been named the "fire safety floor".

Tuesday: My roommate, her boyfriend, and I all woke up psyched for something called the "Labyrinth Walk" in one of the buildings during New Student Week, but when we got there we were greeted by a smiling woman who invited us in to "meditate and center our souls." There wasn't a mirror or a wall or even a corn maze. Instead there was a patterned sheet laid out on the floor, with a pudgy girl "meditating" in the center and another girl twirling around the whorls in slow motion. Everyone in the room called out "Join us!" It was quite terrifying. We ran away with excuses about a prior "appointment". After that, I went to what was supposed to be a fun event led by the Japanese Student Society... except for the fact that the club never showed up. I ended up waiting in a room with a couple of partially-Asian people and quite a few wapanese white people. This would have been okay (I made some new friends), but for one person. She was a chubby white woman who kept going on about how much she knew about Japan ("... and then the maikos would come in first, followed by the geishas, then the oirans would come in last, because, as everyone knows, oirans always come last..."), then her ancestry, then herself, even though no one was talking to her and everyone was obviously not interested. When she got up to leave, she walked past my small group and said "bye" to everybody, and then patted my head. Only my head. (probably because I was the only full Asian in the room and she was trying to absorb my Asian-ness) A little bit of static electricity sparked between her hand and my head, and she said "Oh! I shocked you! I'm so sorry!" and then proceeded to run her fingers through my hair. She said "your hair is so soft" while molesting my head, and then left. Everyone in the room (especially me) just looked horrified and wide-eyed at each other after that, and then left with some awkward good-byes. Ugh.

Luckily, after that, I had a great day. We went to a club's version of The Amazing Race, where we had to race all around Portland following hints and then had to complete various tasks. We went to Voodoo Donut, Powell's Books, Pioneer Square, the Rose Quarter, and then finally back to the PSU parkblocks. Among the tasks, we had to eat a bunch of crackers then whistle, solve a story problem, make a human pyramid with a random person, and play a water passing game. It was SO much fun, even though I was running around in slippers and holding up the whole group with my amazing unathletic skillz. However, I solved the math riddle/equation in two minutes ("I'm useful!"), which helped us to come in 3rd place out of 13 teams. (one of my teammates said "Thank god we brought an Asian!" lol) We made a bunch of friends and had a great time, even though we're all a little sunburnt and our legs hurt.

Wednesday: Woke up early to go on a tour of Portland, which was nice. But after it was done, we all hopped off a street car and were left to our own devices. With my great sense of direction, I ended up walking the wrong way. By the time I asked for directions, I wasn't totally off the edge the map I was carrying. On the bright side, I did make it to an open market and past Safeway. Note to Self: If you pass a statue of a man on a horse, you've gone too far. By the time I managed to make my way back to the dorm, I was just in time to go with Rachael to a Bookstore Party hoping for free stuff (fail). That night we tried to go to a fencing class which was full and ended up going to a salsa class led by the same lady from the Labyrynth (I left early). Rode the tram (AKA flying gondola spaceship thing) over Portland, which was really cool. It goes to a medical college/hospital, which is kind of cool.

Thursday: Slept in. Woke up in time to go to a how-to scholarship workshop for new students, then to the Pacific Islander Club Meet & Greet. The majority of the PIC were students from Hawaii, which was totally cool. We got to do "speed-dating" style introductions, and I made a bunch of new friends. During the event, people kept asking me if I knew a certain guy when they learned which high school I had come from. Turns out that a guy from my high school class, whose name I've heard but have never met, is going to this school. So I met him for the first time at the meeting. So random. LOL. That night, we went to an activity in the old athletic center (the new one hasn't opened yet), and I got to swim for a little while. I also ate a pile of shrimp. Nice.

Friday: New Student Convocation. Listened to people talk for a while, then went on a "scavanger hunt" in the student union building. Disregarding the fact that we kept having to run up and down stairs, it was pretty cool that all the hints were by text message. We are now in the digital age. I attempted to cook fish jun for lunch. I kind of... mixed up the steps, but Rachael still loved it. I think she'll like it more once I do it correctly. I used talapia, which was actually really yummy, and not very expensive at all. Went to a sad "carnival" on campus which actually was a couple of student-made games. It was... pretty sad. If it weren't for the balloon arch, I would have been pretty pissed. At least I got to throw darts at balloons (I hit a balloon with all three of my darts) and I got to have a shirt custom screenprinted for $2 (I had it say "GIRAFFE"). Had an okay dinner in the dining hall with a friend from my floor, a guy from the PIC, and a guy who invited himself. (this guy also invited himself into our room earlier that day)

Saturday: Went with Rachael to the Open Market on campus. It was pretty awesome. Bought maple and lox smoked salmon, some fresh crab, some flowers, apple cider, etc... We're planning to eat the lox salmon on salad. It'll be awesome. Went to something called "Dental Impressions", where I was supposed to be able to get stone molds of my teeth (AWESOME, I know), but there was no one there. I was devastated. Got giant fruit smoothies at a nearby store (wasn't that good) and went to an icecream social that wasn't really that social. Oh well. Watched the new season of America's Next Top Model with Rachael and ate some of her fake chicken (what exactly is it?) for dinner.

Sunday: Went with Rachael and our friend from The Amazing Race activity to the Saturday & Sunday Open Market downtown. I ended up spending less than $20 on a giant elephant ear pastry (apple butter, cinnamon, and sugar) and two pendants. Not bad. There was a man walking around with a purebred Bengal leopard cat draped around his shoulders, and we got to pet it. It was so mellow and it loved him so much. Too cute. Also went to Target (got trashcans and a hand towel, yay!) and watched Dodgeball in someone else's room. I made instant curry, corn soup, and leftover rice for dinner.

Tonight:
I am currently sitting at my computer, eating baby mum-mums (you know, the healthy cracker things you give babies to gum on for a while) and dried fish. Don't judge me, they're delicious. I can hear the traffic and ambulances outside our window, since our room looks over an onramp to the free way and the hospital. We get to hear the revving of engines as the cars try to get up to speed, and we hear the sirens fullblast at all hours. Eventually it'll come to the point where Rachael and I can't sleep without the soothing sounds of traffic and sirens. I'll have to record them so that I'll be able to fall asleep once I go home.

Other: Our room is pretty much the unofficial hangout spot on our floor. It's hot, so we leave the door open for air, and our room is right in the middle of three hallways, so people just seem to naturally congregate inside of it. It's a huge difference from the "Kristen Cave" I had in my last dorm. Most of the time it's nice having people come to visit, and I like waving at the Vietnamese people when they're in the hallway, but... I wonder what's a polite way to tell people that they're unwelcome. What if you like most of the people in your room, but you don't like their friends? How do I tell people that I just want to hermit on my computer or in bed, that it's okay to pop in and say hi but not to hang out in my room, etc etc etc? I'm trying to figure out a way to have some level of private time without closing the door or writing a flat out "Do Not Disturb" sign.

Besides the random head-molesting, weaboo, white chick, I have also been approached by two guys with mustaches. Once while in Safeway and once while walking up the street. I had never seen them before. Apparantly, I've still got "it". If you're ever interested in strange women or guys with mustaches, I can hook you up.

Class starts tomorrow, I don't have class until 2:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I have Fridays off. It's pretty nice not having to go to sleep early in order to wake up early.

If you've read this and have comments or questions, facebook or email me. You should already have my contacts.

Here we go on down the road
Three friends on a vacation
With travel plans to distant lands
In search of imagination!
-from some old Reader Rabbit computer game my sister had

Except in this case, it's just me. Tomorrow night I'm flying off to my new school. Wish me luck!

Note: The following part is just for my family.

Dear Mom,
Thanks for working so hard on the cookbook and helping me to send all my stuff. Please don't cry too much. You know we'll be in touch almost every day. Feel free to send me a text any time. (Yeah, okay, even late at night. You know I'll probably still be up.) I'm going to try to update this blog more often, so please check it every once in a while. I'll be gone for a shorter time than I was home this summer. Love you.

Dear Dad,
Thanks for the money. Hahaha. But seriously, thanks for everything. I think how you supported my school transfer and choice of major makes you a really awesome dad. You know I'll work hard. Now you have Zippy all to yourself every night... (but only for now)

Dear Staci,
Thanks for playing Mariokart with me every day. Keep practicing, and by the time I get back maybe you'll be good enough to restore your honor. Maybe. I'll email or AIM you when I find cool new Suju stuff. I'll also let you know when I find my super-handsome, tall, Asian, rich, wonderful, perfect boyfriend. (kukuku) Speaking of boyfriends, you better not start "hanging out" with anyone. I'm watching you... O_O Take care of yourself, don't be afraid to stand up for what you think is right, try not to half-ass things, be safe, and have fun.

Dear Zippy Meow-Meow,
Don't forget me. You're allowed to sleep on other people's beds for now, but you know that you're all mine when I get back. Love youuuu~

So this is what has been happening lately in the life of KK.

1. Everyone is leaving for college again, and I'm still here for another month. My new school is apparently on a different schedule from most of the rest, so my classes don't start until September 28. Almost everyone is gone already, and the people who are staying here in Hawaii have already started classes, and thus have no time for me. F*** school and come play with meee...

2. I'm still single. There has been ZERO romantic anything for me this summer. While I've already long passed the "desperation" stage, I have to admit that it's pretty boring. All of my friends either have jobs (which I don't have because no one wants to hire for only the summer), or boyfriends (which I don't have because I'm... well... anyway...), or both. I have been using the time to cement my bonds with my cat. Oh well.

3. Aikido has made me realize how incredibly unfit I am. I've got the flexibility of a wooden chair, and rolling like a panda isn't that easy when you're shaped like a giraffe. However, I've finally gotten the hang of most of the rolling and falling (though backwards rolling still sucks quite a bit), and learning the arts has been really fun and relatively easy. (the hardest part is learning the names of everything XD) The one time my sister and I got to learn to use the jo (AKA the long wooden stick you hurt people with) was probably the most fun I've had in a long time.

The only problem is that taking aikido has shown me just how crooked my back really is. It hurts like... like... well for lack of an appropriate metaphor, let's just say that it hurts like something that hurts really bad. I just passed my first belt test tonight (yay me!), but by the end of it I could barely stand. Seriously, at the end of class I got stuck mid-bow and nearly crumpled to the floor. (my sister had to pull me up) My sensei highly suggests that I see a chiropractor. I guess this is what I get for trading all my athletic ability for my height. Siiigh...

4. My uncle recently returned from a trip to Korea, and brought back with him a bunch of great Super Junior goodies for me and my sister to share. We now have Version C or their 3rd album "Sorry Sorry," the repackaged edition of their 2nd album "Don't Don," their mini-album "U," the subgroup Super Junior - Happy's album, and the Chinese subgroup Super Junior - M's album "Me." We're so happy with fangirlish glee that we can barely stand it. The best present of the bunch, Super Junior's 1st Asia Tour "Super Show" DVD, is GREAT. This is so much better than watching videos on YouTube. (My sister and I were like, "IT'S SO CLEAR..." @.@)

On that subject, over the summer I've really come to like this group. Sure, they have 13 members (in the beginning even I was like, "What the hell? It's like a boy version of Morning Musume. *scoff*"), but the charm with this group is that they are so much FUN to watch. With so many members, the group is able to branch out and participate in a variety of TV shows, dramas, and performances besides their musical activities. The group can send a few members (sometimes a single member) to participate in a show or hold a radio DJ or MC job at little cost to the mechanics to the group, and garner fans from everywhere. They've even split the group into smaller subgroups which focus on a particular style of music (the most recent being the enormously successful subgroup Super Junior M, which took China by storm and sings everything in Mandarin). Frankly, I am sure that Super Junior was made to "divide and conquer." Anyway, because of this, Super Junior can be seen in far more programs and shows than other bands. And they're hilarious. Their first show to feature all the members, "Explore the Human Body" (an educational/comedy) was brilliant, and you can watch it over and over again with it only getting better as you start to recognize all the members. And while at first I only liked them for their comedy shows, recently their music has been amazing. Their 3rd and newest album, "Sorry Sorry," is the type of album where you like ALL of the songs on the CD (and that's saying a lot coming from me). I introduced them to my younger sister (who was also skeptical at first), and now she's as hooked as I am.

5. Hopefully, I will be using my increasing hours of hermit-ness to finally get some more art done. I have this entire LIST of things I want to draw. (It's titled "Things to Draw." How original.) But we'll see.

Also, sorry for not posting anything worthwhile lately. Now that I'm home for the summer and enjoying my fabulous social life (AKA my cat and the internet), there hasn't really been anything worthwhile to write about. I'm getting ready to go to my new school (I transferred), but I can't really talk about that because I don't want to share personal information online. ("Personal information," as in names/dates/locations. Stuff like my likes/dislikes/interests is okay to share.) I'll be posting an updated version of my Anime/Manga List that will include chapter numbers. (Not that anyone really cares) I'm also trying to finish more of my art, since I keep starting things and never finishing or posting them. Procrastination... siiigh...

No, there's no special occasion coming up... I just wanted to post this so that anyone who wants to know, will know. But if you really want to know, my birthday's on October 15. *hint hint* I guess I'll be adding things as I think of them.

1. Super Junior 3rd Album (Repackaged Version)

--- This has two of my favorite SuJu songs, "Sorry Sorry" and "It's You (Neorago)". I want it... so... badly...

2. 8GB 4th Generation iPod Nano (Turquoise)
--- My 3rd Gen. iPod Nano has been acting kind of... finicky lately. It freezes every once in a while, doesn't want to sync with iTunes, keep having to reset/reformat it, etc... I want to get the Turquoise-colored one, though I say "Cerulean" (because it's my favorite color).

3. New Foundation...
--- Yeah, I know this isn't something easy to choose. But Bare Escentials just isn't cutting it anymore, so do you have any suggestions? Something good, but affordable (as in under $30) would be good.

4. Cute/Nice Waterproof Jacket
--- I'm transferring to a different college this fall, and it's rainy all the time...

5. Cute/Nice Waterproof Sidebag
--- To carry my books and school supplies. I have a really good one that I decorated myself and used all last year, but it's not waterproof... at all... and like I said, "it's rainy all the time..."

6. Newest Versions of Adobe Products
--- Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, etc. These are expensive, but I'll probably end up needing them for my art major anyway...

7. New Wacom Tablet (at least 4"x6"... a Cintiq or other touch-screen would be AWESOME)
--- I'm using a 4"x6" Intuos3 right now, but... is the pad supposed to start peeling off the base when I draw?

8. Printer/Scanner/Copier
--- I sold my last one to my friend before I moved out of the dorms... I need one of these... I'm going to have to buy it myself...

9. Super Junior Poster
--- I've never been a fan of any music group before. But now I want to tell the world... O___O

10. A Nice Ring or Pendant
--- I made a long, black necklace, but there's nothing hanging from it...

Warning by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

I felt like wasting time.

-- Just a short rant about how awesome I am.

1. I feel like a badass when I drink milk out of the carton.

2. When I was in Walgreens, a bottle of Burt's Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion blew up in my hand all by itself. It was like a bright yellow waterfall, everywhere. No tissues. I smell.

Reminds me of the time my sister asked me to smell some strawberry shampoo in Longs Drugs, and then shot it up my nose.

3. The other day, I was talking about this new Asian guy with my friend while we were waiting for the elevator. I was just saying, "... and then when I walked out the door, there he was walking in, and in my mind I was like--" (the elevator opens and he's inside) "Well, HELLOOO THERE!"

... I just yelled it at him. Way awkward. Wait! Um... I really wasn't talking to you, I was just talking about you. Yeah...

4. I own a Naruto headband. I didn't get to go to Kawaii Kon in costume this year, so I just stared at it for a while, depressed. I'm such a geek.

5. While I was writing this note, I accidentally pressed the "Back" button and lost everything.

6. Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly angsty, I like to imagine myself hunched in a dark corner, growing mushrooms. (Watered with my tears, I suppose.) I like to tell people about this. It makes me feel better. Don't judge me!

7. Once, I had a dream where I was deeply in love with Lucario. It was very vivid, full of dramatic plot twists (he was such a gentleman), and I still remember it clearly. The next time I played Super Smash Bros Brawl was extremely awkward.

8. I never know how to answer when someone says, "What's up?" Sure, you could tell them all about how crappy your day was, but what if they don't care? "Not much, you?" How are you supposed to tell the difference? You could be sarcastic and do the "Nothin' but the ceiling, baby" response, but that just makes you look like a jerk (not too mention that it might be a little weird to say that if your friend is a male). Also, what if just they were using it as a greeting? How the heck are you supposed to respond to a greeting in the form of a question? "Hey, what's up?" "... Hi." Don't use it as a greeting. Dude.

Generally, I deal with this problem with my "Nonstop Walking" technique. When asked the question, spend a moment being confused, then spend a long time thinking of a suitable answer and debating the intention of the question. By the time you may (or may not) have reached a conclusion, you'll have already physically passed each other, and the opportunity to answer will have been missed. Whew! You just dodged that bullet. Spend a moment feeling sheepish, but keep walking.

9. I am a master of the "Sidewalk Tango", which is the little dance you do when you're trying to pass someone heading your way and they keep going the same direction as you. I usually solve this problem by just bulldozering into the person accidentally.

10. In my head, I sometimes call people by strange nicknames that only I know. Like "Stesh", "Maximilian", "Foxamilian", "Mollimus", "Janish", "Bryn-a-ryn-ryn-lyn", "Michansan", "Talibana", "Brandonian", "Eldonian", and "Barakakakakakaka". Sometimes the nicknames slip out in public and no one knows who I'm talking about.

11. I'm really good at stalking. (don't ask)

12. I smacked my fingernail with the zipper-pull on my jacket today while I was putting it on. It hurt.

13. This weekend, I walked into a cloud of scary gnats under a tree on the way to Walgreens. On the way back, I purposefully walked on the other side of the street so it wouldn't happen again. It did.

14. I don't know what to do when I see a friend walking my way from afar. Do you just keep staring into each other's eyes as you walk closer? Silently, constantly staring as you approach... That's kind of creepy. Or, you could look away and pretend you don't see them, and then be like, "Oh! Hello there! I didn't notice you until just now." The only problem is that you probably already waved, as if to say, "Hey! Yeah, I see you way over there. I'm acknowledging your existence from afar."

You can solve this problem in my style by first waving, then barreling at them full speed while screaming their name. They like that. (maybe)

15. I memorized the first four lines of the Periodic Table by saying all of the letters together like a song. A retarded-gremlin-with-bad-teeth song. "H-he-libebcnofne-namg-alsipsclar-kca-sctivcrmnfeconicuzn-gageasse-brkr."

16. Why do guys lift up their shirts and rub their stomach while they're walking? I always notice and feel weird about it. Sometimes I wonder what's going through their mind at the time...

"I just ate, and boy, do I feel goooood!" "I luv rub mai tummy lol." "I'm sexy. Check out the navel hair."

17. Facial hair is gross. I don't care what you say, you shave that beast off before you talk to me.

Back hair and excessive body hair is worse. "Ooh, hugging you is just like going to the zoo!"

18. Today I didn't know I had an Information Systems exam. (there's only 3 in the semester) Whooo~

19. I got a Slushie from 7-eleven in a collectable holographic X-Men cup. Gambit. It's super duper cool.

20. I air drummed to "Any Way You Want It" and "We Built This City" tonight.

Awkward...

tenkkay
-- I haven't posted anything new (or original) for a while, so here's a list of some awkward moments that I've noticed happen all the time, and some things that I've found that confuse me. I guess I'll add more as I think of them.

1. "What's Up?"
A friendly acquaintance passes and says this to you. How are you supposed to answer? Sure, you could tell them all about how crappy your day was, but what if they just wanted something casual? "Not much, you?" How are you supposed to tell the difference? You could be sarcastic and do the "Nothin' but the ceiling, baby" response, but that just makes you look like a jerk (not too mention that it might be a little weird to say that if your friend is a male). Also, what if just they were using it as a greeting? How the heck are you supposed to respond to a greeting in the form of a question? "Hey, what's up?" "... Hi." Don't use it as a greeting. Dude.

My Personal Style: When passing the person, slow down just a bit but keep walking. Smile and acknowledge their presence, maybe give them a wave or a friendly nod. Spend a moment feeling sheepish, and then continue on your merry way.

Key Point: Don't forget to keep walking.

2. "I see you from afar."
You're walking along minding your own business, and you see a friend heading your way down the same path. Your eyes meet, and you both smile. "Hey, there's my friend!" Only problem is, you're too far away to talk to each other; in fact, you're so far away from each other that it'll take at least ten seconds for you to get within a comfortable hearing distance of each other (without running or yelling like a loon). This is when it gets awkward. What now? Do you just keep staring into each other's eyes as you walk closer? Silently, constantly staring as you approach... Honestly, that's kind of weird. Creepy, even. Or, you could look away. You could glance mildly to the side (anywhere but at your friend) for the duration of the walk, and when you've reached a suitable distance, suddenly look toward them again as if to say "Oh! Hello there! I didn't notice you until just now." This saves you the awkwardness of gazing into each other's eyes. The only problem with this is that earlier, you obviously noticed the other person. You probably even waved as if to say "Hey! Hi! Yeah, I see you way over there. I'm acknowledging your existance." Isn't it a little rude to look away now? But you don't want to stare at them like a creeper. So what do you do? I mean, you could just keep waving and smiling and nodding as you make your wordless approach, but doesn't that make you look even more strange?

My Personal Style: As indecisive as you are, when you are faced with this situation there is only one thing that is guaranteed to happen-- You will be completely and utterly confused. Everything else is up to chance. You'll probably end up doing the "running and yelling like a loon" thing.
Key Point: When commencing with the running and the yelling, it's always fun to shout your friend's name. Or your own name. Or something. As long as there's names, shouting, and running, you should be fine.

Next: accidental touches, "The Sidewalk Tango", peeing at the same time, and being alone with another person in the elevator

In the meantime, please enjoy this rap.

-- Copied from my facebook notes again. Sorry, but I had to cut out some parts because my livejournal is open to the public and I don't really want my personal information floating around out there.

Here are the rules - post this list on your profile (in Notes) replacing my answers with yours.
Tag 25 people to do the same thing.
If I tagged YOU, it's because I want to know more about YOU! (obsession?)

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
I don't think so...

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
Hmm... I don't really remember... um... oh. Benjamin Button. (I saw that movie twice, and I still cried)

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
... GIVE ME FISH

5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
No, but someday, maybe

6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON, WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I would, because I'm TOTALLY AWESOME. (lol, don't take this too seriously :D) We would be great friends. And as for the "too similar as me" thing, I have such an inconsistent personality that we would end up having slightly different personalities but all of the same interests at the same time. It would be GREAT. What would be even BETTER would be if the other me was a GUY. (Lol, but slightly taller, right?)

7. DO YOU USE SARCASM?
I am the Queen of the Sarcasm Empire, everyone worship me.

8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?

14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Hair, then Body Type, then Height, then all the rest.

Cerulean is MINE. Yeah, I went there. You want to make something of it? Bring it! Fight to the death.

24. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
My mommy. :3

25. DO YOU LIKE THE PERSON WHO SENT THIS TO YOU?
... I wasn't going to do this. I really wasn't. I'd made up my mind, was resolute (iron will and all that), and then...

She HAD to mention my name at the very end of hers.

And so now my ego is all giant and inflated and I had to do it and it's all her fault.

... I'll forgive you if you give me the Cerulean Crayon.

26. FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH?
I'm not really a "sports person." But if I had to choose one, it would be volleyball, seeing as those are the only games I've actually gone to and sat through.

29. DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS?
... sometimes

30. FAVORITE FOOD?
Japanese Food is my other lover <3

31. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?
Happy Endings. I can't take scary movies... I get scared too easily, and the problem with being artsy is that I can remember EXACTLY what every scene looked and sounded like... *shudders*

32. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
Robin Hood: Men in Tights. :D I have it here with me.

33. WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING?

Err... I used to live in -----, so I would say ------, but now I live in ------, so I would say -----... *confused* @_@

45. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
I possess an impressive cavalcade of useless talents. Untangling knots and Slinkies. Eating ice cream cones neatly. Bobbing and Back Floating. Playing kid's clapping/hand games. Back-stitching. Saying movie quotes. Making only one type of cookies (Valentine's Day :D). Playing Cat's Cradle. Walking on stilts.

46 WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
------, -----

47. WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK?
If you know me, you could email the answers to me :)

~ 25 Things ~

tenkkay
I was told to update my blog more often, but I couldn't think of anything momentous to write about. So here's a copy of a tag from my facebook account.

~25 Things~

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you.

I already did the "16 Things" tag, so I guess I'll try to write about something new. (Hopefully without getting too whiny towards the end...) If I tagged you, that means that I want you to do this. So do it. NOW.

1. I don't care what anyone says, I'm not going to "grow out of" anime and manga. I love it.
2. I'm trying to grow my hair out.
3. I have an irrational hatred of mustaches. (Molestache.... O_o)
4. My favorite part of my body is my long torso and my collarbone/shoulders.
5. I can walk on stilts, and I'm really good at it. (useless talent)
6. For some reason, my favorite accessories are the ones that go on my neck. Necklaces and scarves.
7. I've never had the flu, chickenpox, or broken any bones. (knock on wood)
8. I don't shave, because I don't have to. I've been told that I'm like a naked mole rat. XD
9. I'm don't think I'm good at writing in first-person. For some reason, everything comes out unoriginal with poor grammar. I'm better at more analytical/review style writing.
10. I'm probably one of the biggest Disney geeks you will ever meet. I freaking love Disney movies, and Disney music, and I really believe Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. When ever I go, I'm constantly smiling, I have to ride the Dumbo, and I glomp random characters (and people stare).
11. Meat is delicious, and seafood is my favorite. I like unusual things. The things I want to try the most right now are: snake, otoro, turtle, and fugu.
12. I used to be really OCD. (used to be?)
13. I like having black hair and black eyes. I don't know why. I just do.
14. Tetris is my facebook crack. I can play for hours. It was the first game I ever had for my GameBoy Color.
15. I enjoy looking at beautiful people, especially beautiful women. (I'm totally not gay. I like guys. A lot.) I think that it has something to do with the "artsy" part of me. (Like I want to draw them...? I like drawing beautiful girls...) I can appreciate things that look nice.
16. I'm superstitious in a very non-traditional way. For example, whenever I take a test or ride a plane, I have to do things a certain way beforehand, and I feel like it helps me do better. I suppose I'm just a creature of routine. It's probably something like how some people have lucky underwear.
17. I really like playing Super Smash Brothers, and I'm pretty good at it, too. Unfortunately, it seems that I can only play as "pink and fluffy" characters... (Kirby, Jigglypuff, Peach) I've been getting better at Meta Knight and Lucario though.
18. I'm never going to pierce my ears. Sometimes I see beautiful earings when I go shopping and almost want to. But I don't.
19. My favorite color is Cerulean Blue.
20. I have an overactive imagination. It's extremely strong, and very visual. (I often find myself doing JD's thing from Scrubs...) If you tell me something, I will immediately have a very clear mental image of it in my head. Sometimes this is good, but it really depends on what company I'm in...
21. Kirby is my favorite video game character of all time. I love all of the Kirby games, especially Kirby for the N64 and Kirby Air Glide for the GameCube. When I play as Kirby in SSB, I have to be blue.
22. My cat is like my god. I spoil him and call him names like "Oh Great Prince of Cats," "Zippy Meow-Meow," "You Handsome Man Cat You," and "Grand Master Zip." If there was a fire, I would run back inside and he'd be the first thing I'd save.
23. I love my sister. People say I have a "sister complex." It's a close tie between her and my cat.
24. I have come to believe that Rosetta Stone has magical dragon-fairy powers and was blessed by unicorns. I want it. Badly.
25. I've never had a boyfriend or a first kiss.
